TEAM TD HELP CLEAN UP LOCAL BEACH, CREATING A CLEANER COASTLINE

North Devon is renowned for its beautiful beaches. Turnstyle are lucky enough to have this amazing resource on our doorstep. Naturally, these beaches attract a lot of visitors throughout the year – especially over the summer months. Unfortunately this can lead to the negative side effect of litter being left behind by beach-goers.

In 2018, North Devon took measures to reduce plastic pollution in a bid to help clean up our much loved beaches. This came with the help of Plastic Free North Devon, an influential local charity that Turnstyle Designs have worked with since 2019.

Beach clean-up

This summer, two members of our team volunteered to help clean up Croyde Beach – a favorite of locals and visitors alike. The clean up was organised by Holly of Parkdean Resorts, with the support of Plastic Free North Devon and The Thatch, Croyde.

The day started with clear blue skies and bright sunshine. When the team arrived at Croyde, they were pleasantly surprised by how clean the beach appeared. However as the day progressed they were shocked to see the amount of plastic that they were gathering as they moved along the beach.

A large proportion of litter that ends up on the beach is not only left by people on land but also washes in from the sea. Sadly, the ocean is filled with plastic, and more is being washed up on our shorelines every day. According to Surfers Against Sewage a total of 8 million pieces of plastic pollution make their its way into the ocean every day. If it wasn’t for the volunteers clearing the rubbish from our beaches, it would end up in the water, contributing to the wider issue!

"What a day to join the beach clean! Sun shining and a beautiful beach with hidden treasures. It was surprising how much rubbish we found between us on what looked like a clean and tidy beach! "

About plastic free north devon

Plastic Free North Devon is a local environmental charity created in 2017. Their aim is to inspire North Devon residents, tourists and businesses to reduce their consumption of single-use plastic, remove it from the environment and dispose of it properly.  Since the creation of Plastic North Devon, they have seen an increased passion within the community towards this issue.

Plastic Free North Devon regularly organises beach clean-ups throughout the year. Their aim is to encourage everyone to get outside and give back at the same time by carrying out these cleans. In addition to organising beach cleans, Plastic Free North Devon offer talks in schools throughout North Devon. The talks are focused on educating staff and students about the problems with plastic pollution and what can be done about the issue.

Plastic Free North Devon established Ocean Explorer Academy (OEA), which is a bespoke program delivered to students from North Devon’s local schools. The program connects students with nature in an immersive, fun and empowering way. The program is aimed at helping future generations become a connected community of planet-saving individuals with a clear path into conservation-based mindsets.
